The upcoming Warcraft movie may be centered on Arthas Menethil's path to the dark side.

WorldofWar.net has discovered that Legendary Pictures (and Blizzard Entertainment) has made a few new changes to the Warcraft movie details, and have thus affected the information found on IMDB. The website said that the IMDB's "Warcraft" entry now lists four film sub-entries based on the term including the infamous South Park episode (Make Love, Not Warcraft) and three other non-Blizzard films.

But as for Sam Raimi's theatrical release is concerned, the upcoming 2011 film is now slated as Warcraft: The Rise of the Lich King. As the title indicates, the movie may be based on the material found in Christie Golden's novel which in turn uses heavy references from Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. Unfortunately, the IMDB page doesn't offer any clues into the casting or actual characters appearing in the flick, however WorldofWar.net assumes that it could be based on Arthas Menethil as a main figure, the featured villain in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion.

"When a plague of undeath threatened all that he loved, Arthas was driven to pursue an ill-fated quest for a runeblade powerful enough to save his homeland," reads part of the book's description. "Yet the object of his search would exact a heavy price from its new master, beginning a horrifying descent into damnation. Arthas's path would lead him through the arctic northern wastes toward the Frozen Throne, where he would face, at long last, the darkest of destinies."

Based on the book, the storyline could produce a hot and tasty movie if the screenwriter doesn't go all George Lucas and turn this Anakin-like anti-hero into a ball of whiny boredom. Then again, based on comments made at BlizzCon 2007, the movie won't be anything like Lord of the Rings.

"Thrall will be in the movie," reads the report from the convention. "It will be told primarily from the Alliance point of view. The time of the movie is set about 1 year before World of Warcraft begins. The film is mainly about cultures in conflict. It won't be an adventure movie like LoTR, more of a war film."

Sam Raimi said that "Saving Private Ryan" writer will pen the Warcraft movie.

Spider-Man and Evil Dead director Sam Raimi dropped a few Warcraft nuggets in a recent phone interview with MTV Multiplayer, revealing that the upcoming movie will not be based on the Arthas: Rise of the Lich King novel witten by Christie Golden. Raimi said that the story will be an "original effort" based on the Warcraft universe.

"We would choose... something that encompasses lands and characters and storylines, and we would be true to it," he said. "But our story may or may not be about one of those central characters."

Raimi also revealed that Robert Rodat has signed on to write the story. His previous screenplays include The Patriot and Saving Private Ryan, two extremely successful movies. While the credentials don't seem ideal for a fantasy-based, game-based movie, Raimi seemed rather confident that Rodat will "properly capture" the Horde and the Alliance and the overall mythology.

"We want to be really faithful to the game," Raimi said. "We would have our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that world that feels like a 'World of WarCraft' adventure. Only obviously it's very different 'cause it's expanded and translated into the world of a motion picture
